Shortz and Newsday’s Crossword Puzzle Editor Stan Newman agreed to be editorial advisors.įormer New York Times crossword blogger Jim Horne is posting all the converted crosswords on his website and recently added a feature that lets fans solve them. They’re nearly a third of the way through. In short order, he was supervising 31 constructors and enthusiasts, two in India. More than 15,000 old Times puzzles still needed to be converted, more than he could handle. Even better, he got to meet Reagle and his other idols and play pingpong with Shortz.Īfter returning home, David created the website and posted a shout-out to enlist other crossword enthusiasts in his massive undertaking. He placed 357th out of 592 who competed against the clock to solve seven puzzles. “My parents have been really supportive of my crossword career,” he says. That same month, David’s parents flew him to the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in Brooklyn. The project won the Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society award last March for “the most challenging, original, thorough, and creative investigation of a problem involving mathematics accessible to a high school student.” Shortz and Newsday’s Crossword Puzzle Editor Stan Newman agreed to be editorial advisers. For his science research course, he set about digitizing all New York Times crossword puzzles pre-Will Shortz, from 1942 to the end of 1993, typing every clue and answer into a database. Last fall, as a freshman at Palos Verdes Peninsula High, David decided it was an art form that must be preserved. In “Wordplay,” Shortz reads some of the more entertaining missives he’s received:Frogs hop, sir, toads do not.īut the crossword puzzle is more than just a brain teaser, it’s a “historical record of the times in which it was written,” David says, a snapshot of current events, pop culture, classical music, art, film, even cartoons. Those are just some of the words Times crossword fans toss around in letters they have fired off to Shortz. Tower of London, for instance, contains rofl (rolling on floor laughing).Ĭrossword clues can be tricky and misleading, which is what puzzlers both love and hate. One of his favorites involved hiding text message abbreviations in longer answers. Since then, David has had five more puzzles published in theTimes. (The youngest is Ben Pall, who was also 14 at the time, but younger than David by a few months). His puzzle ran June 16, 2011, making him the second-youngest person to have a crossword puzzle in theTimessince Shortz took over in 1993. He didn’t, and on his 17th try, when he was 14, David got the letter he had been waiting for and a check for $200. New York Times Crossword Puzzle Editor Will Shortz rejected it but told him not to give up. When he was 12, he constructed his first crossword puzzle (the theme was puns on the game Clue) on graph paper with a pencil and eraser and sent it to theTimes. It didn’t take long, though, beforedoingpuzzles wasn’t enough for David. His best time is three minutes flat for a Monday puzzle. if it’s Sunday or Monday) for theTimespuzzle to post. TV talk-show funnyman Jon Stewart admits in the documentary that he will do the crossword in USA Today, “but I don’t feel good about myself.”ĭavid is not a puzzle purist, he will solve the occasional Los Angeles Times puzzle, but he does wait at his computer every night at 7 p.m. Loyal fans who make appearances in “Wordplay” include President Bill Clinton, filmmaker Ken Burns and former Major League Baseball pitcher Mike Mussina. This is perhaps a good place to pause and explain that The New York Times crossword is the gold standard of crossword puzzles, an American icon. Sundays are the longest and as hard as a Thursday puzzle. At one point in “Wordplay” (which came out in 2006), former New York Times Public Editor Daniel Okrent compares putting one of Reagle’s puzzles in the Tuesday paper to putting Barry Bonds in Little League.įor the uninitiated, The New York Times crosswords get harder as the week goes on. Reagle is considered one of the most prolific and creative puzzle constructors out there. He is so hungry for this.Īnother former champ, Trip Payne, confides to the camera that he had to leave New York for Florida to get away from “the puzzle scene.”īy the time David finished watching the documentary, he wanted to be just like Merl Reagle. In another scene, a former tournament champ named Ellen Ripstein talks about the danger of a young up-and-comer named Tyler:Tyler is just like a tiger. The excitement is palpable, the man on camera says as competitors hunch over their crossword puzzles, furiously scribbling.

That being said, I entered the theater today to see her newest film, “The Blind Side,” with my guard up.įortunately, I didn’t have to keep it up for long. Call me naïve, but it just didn’t fit with the girl-next-door image Miss Bullock had been known for in previous romantic comedies. Like many “believers,” I was offended by several things in the film, not the least of which was the gratuitous nude scene that Sandra agreed to do for director, Anne Fletcher. “Blind-sided” might well have described me this past June, when I slipped into a theater to catch Sandra Bullock in “ The Proposal”-something I should never have done without having read some reviews on Christian Spotlight in advance. More importantly, the look and feel of Klientboost’s website stays consistent across all devices, yet they’ve managed to tailor their user experience to each device. Their website loads remarkably fast at four seconds using 3G connections. This is another fantastic example of mobile responsive web design. This is a pretty common practice, as it helps reduce clutter on mobile devices, where space is limited. Like Dribbble, GitHub has also removed the search bar and hidden the menu behind a hamburger icon on handheld devices. Users must click the call to action to surface the form. Unlike on desktop and tablet devices, where their signup form is a central focus, GitHub presents only a call-to-action button on mobile. When shifting from desktop to tablet devices, the area above the fold changes from a two-column layout to a single-column layout, with the copy above the signup form instead of beside it.However, there were a few noticeable differences: GitHub’s website offers a consistent experience across every device. They’ve also hidden the menu behind a hamburger icon and removed the search bar. For example, shots are no longer attributed to their maker and the view, comment, and like counts are no longer nested beneath each item. To prevent their website from feeling cluttered on mobile devices, Dribbble has removed several items. Try Freehand, the fast, flexible way to collaborate in real time.ĭribbble’s website features one of the hallmarks of responsive web design: a flexible grid, and it condenses from five columns on desktop and laptop computers to two columns on tablets and mobile phones. Similarly, their signup form is visible on desktop devices, but it’s hidden behind a call-to-action button on tablets and mobile devices, where space is limited. The same arrow is absent from handheld devices, since it’s assumed that users will naturally scroll on a device with touchscreen capabilities. For example, in an effort to prevent users from bouncing, a small arrow directs desktop users to scroll down to see more content. Not only does the font color change to accommodate the background color when shifting from desktop to handheld devices, but the image changes orientation as well.Īccounting for context, Dropbox offers a tailored experience across each device. Dropboxĭropbox has done a great job of using a fluid grid and flexible visuals to design a standout responsive website. Each website offers an experience that’s tailored to the user’s unique context. Rather than quarantining our content into disparate, device-specific experiences, we can use media queries to progressively enhance our work within different viewing contexts.”īelow, we’ve included 11 examples that go beyond the fundamental criteria for responsive web design. “Fluid grids, flexible images, and media queries are the three technical ingredients for responsive web design, but it also requires a different way of thinking. Related: Typography and creating grids for screensīut, Marcotte explains, that’s just the beginning: Together, these three types of functionality allow designers to craft responsive websites. Given that there are over 8.48B unique devices in existence today, this functionality allow teams to create timeless designs capable of adapting to any device, regardless of its size or shape. As the “flexible container resizes itself,” he explains, so does the visual within it. Marcotte refers here to using code that prevents rich media files from exceeding the dimensions of their containers, as well as viewports. Plus, it saves everyone time and money by allowing designers to update one version of the website versus many. This enables designers to maintain a consistent look and feel across multiple devices. “Fluid layouts put control of our designs firmly in the hands of our users and their browsing habits,” Marcotte explains. When flexible grids are created using CSS, the columns automatically rearrange themselves to fit the size of the screen or browser window, whether the user is on a 21-inch desktop computer, a 13-inch laptop, a 9.7-inch tablet, or a 5.5-inch mobile phone. This is superior to simply defining breakpoints in the HTML/CSS, as it’s a more tailored experience for the user. Media queries thus allow developers to use condition checks to alter web designs based on the properties of the user’s device. “A media query allows us to target not only certain device classes but to actually inspect the physical characteristics of the device rendering our work,” Marcotte explains. Strictly speaking, responsive websites have three defining features: 1. “Mobile phones and tablets are responsible for 56.74% of global internet usage.” What is a responsive website? This means it is generally a better idea to use Two-Handed Weapons than One-Handed ones, because you are more likely to kill your target in one swing, but there is more to it than that.ĭamage and Speed are the two main Stats of each Weapon, and what you need to consider when using it.Įvery Melee Weapon in the game can do what is called a “Power Attack”, which essentially does about 2x the damage of a normal strike, and it usually has a bit longer of a wind-up. Generally faster weapons deal less Damage per hit, and slower weapons deal more per hit. The first dictates how much you’ll hit for, and the second determines how fast you can attack. The first is Damage (of course), and the second is Speed. Two-Handed Melee WeaponsĪll Melee Weapons have two very important attributes that you need to pay attention to. The Sneak Bonus is a nice to have, because you can kill enemies quietly in 1 hit much of the time. Agility is needed to increase your Max Action Point pool, so that you can Sprint longer and use more Power Attacks. Endurance grants you more Health to keep you alive while fighting, but more importantly allows you to Sprint longer, closing to targets faster. damage, which will be needed to close the distance to enemies without dying. Strength will increase your damage, but also your Carry Weight, allowing you to wear heavier Armor. The 3 main Stats you’ll need for a Melee Build are: Strength, Endurance and Agility.Īgility: +10 Max Action Points per rank / +5 Sneak Rating Bonus per rank This Stat therefore becomes much more important to Melee Builds than any other type of Build. For example, each point of Strength will increase your Melee Damage by 5%, as well as increase your max Carry Weight by 5 pounds. Something many players are not aware of, is that each Stat adds a passive bonus. The first thing we’re going to cover in this Guide is Stats, and how they effect Melee Builds. If you’ve been wanting to try your hand at Melee, then read on for some very helpful information. In this Guide we’ll show you ways you can minimize the damage that you take as well as maximize the damage that you deal. While the concept isn’t overly complicated, it can be harder to pull off in many situations, particularly where there are many enemies with ranged weapons. Melee Builds focus on close-combat damage, and thus need to be able to close the distance to their target rapidly, and strike hard and fast to take it down. A level 50 Build Guide is great, but if you can’t use it until level 50, then it doesn’t have much use right now. The reason for this is that you often don’t get the exact Perk Cards that you need as you Level Up. Please keep in mind while reading this that you will be unlikely to create this exact Build, and that this should be what you are, more or less, working towards. This means we’ll show you the Stats, Perks, Weapons and Armor that you’ll need in order to pull off a successful Melee Build. In this Fallout 76 Melee Build Guide, we’ll be showing you the basics.
